INFLUENCE OF SOIL TYPE ON GROWTH AND ARTEMISININ CONTENT OF WORMWOOD (ARTEMISIA ANNUA L.) CHEN YOUNG VARIETY IN SOKOTO

چکیده
Artemisia annua L. produce an array of complex secondary plant metabolite including artemisinin (ART), which kills the principal malarial parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, a compound current interest in treatments drug resistant malaria. However, this remain expensive and hardy available on global scale. Synthesis ART has been proved to be economically impossible. Therefore, increase yield natural occurring is necessary. The study evaluated influence soil types germination, growth content A. Chen Young variety Sokoto agro ecological region Nigeria and. A greenhouse experiment was conducted 2017 at Botanical garden Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto. seeds were sown plastic pots containing clay, sandy loamy soils completely randomized design with 4 replications. Germination percentage (G), Mean germination time (MT), Coefficient variation (CVt), rate (MR), Uncertainty (U) Synchrony (Z) evaluated. Growth parameter Artemisinin also determined. determined quantified high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using calibration curve constructed by plotting peak area against concentration (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 µg/ml) standard solutions. results revealed that had no significant effect parameters (P<0.05). clay highest G, MT CVt than soils. speed per day observed soil. Clay least values U (2.277±0.2 bit) while degree overlapping frequent (Z). result obtained shows treatment significantly affected type higher (37.73 follow 17.90 15.70 µg/ml respectively. This concludes can germinate survived different Savanna Nigeria. suggested use cultivation for its content.

Seeds of two selected clones of Artemisia annua L., TC1 and TC2, were germinated in a greenhouse. Four-week-old seedlings from both clones were grown in the Thù Đúc province of Ho Chi Minh City on 2(nd) January 2009 and Đà Lat on 20(th) January 2009. During this study period in Thù Đúc province, which is situated 4-5 m above sea level, was experiencing a tropical, dry season with temperatures r...
متن کاملWater deficit effect on the accumulation of biomass and artemisinin in annual wormwood (Artemisia annua L., Asteraceae)
Despite the importance of Artemisia annua L. as the only source of the anti-parasitic drug artemisinin, little is known on the effects of biotic and abiotic stress on artemisinin accumulation. Water deficit is the most limiting factor on plant growth, however it can trigger secondary metabolite accumulation, depending on the plant growth stage and intensity. A. annua cultivated in growth chambe...
متن کاملOverexpression of the Artemisia Orthologue of ABA Receptor, AaPYL9, Enhances ABA Sensitivity and Improves Artemisinin Content in Artemisia annua L
The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in plant development and environmental stress response. In this study, we cloned an ABA receptor orthologue, AaPYL9, from Artemisia annua L. AaPYL9 is expressed highly in leaf and flower. AaPYL9 protein can be localized in both nucleus and cytoplasm. Yeast two-hybrid assay shows AaPYL9 can specifically interact with AtABI1 but not wit...
متن کاملDifferentially Expressed Genes during Contrasting Growth Stages of Artemisia annua for Artemisinin Content
Artemisia annua is the source of antimalarial phytomolecule, artemisinin. It is mainly produced and stored in the glandular secretory trichomes present in the leaves of the plant. Since, the artemisinin biosynthesis steps are yet to be worked out, in this investigation a microarray chip was strategized for the first time to shortlist the differentially expressing genes at a stage of plant produ...
